As we think about the Christmas season, my mind always goes back to the Christmas story…the story of the birth of Jesus. There are so many powerful lessons in the birth of Christ but one that comes to mind is the power of obedience.
In the book of Luke we learn that an angel appeared to Mary announcing that she would give birth to Jesus. Stop for a moment and don’t miss the significance of this event. For you ladies, suppose you were to awaken in the middle of the night tonight. Next to you is an angel announcing you will give birth to the Son of God. What would you do? What would you be thinking? Mary spent some time in discussion with the angel and then simply said, I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true. What a response! Mary didn’t engage in an argument with the angel. She didn’t say how inconvenient this was going to be. She didn’t say she was busy with other things. She didn’t even say the timing just isn’t good right now. Mary simply obeyed.
Mary wasn’t alone in the desire to obey God. Joseph also had a significant part in this event. Now it’s time for the guys to think about what you would do in this situation. Your girlfriend announces to you that she is pregnant and the baby’s father is actually God. Do you believe it? What will you tell your family and friends? Maybe you should simply dissolve this relationship. This just doesn’t seem to be working out for you.
Yet Joseph clearly supported and cared deeply for Mary. In fact, after the birth of Jesus, the book of Matthew tells us this:
An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up! Flee to Egypt with the child and his mother,” the angel said. “Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” That night Joseph left for Egypt with the child and Mary.
I want you to focus on the critical words that night. Yes…that night Joseph left for Egypt. Joseph didn’t question God about this direction. There was no hesitation. Joseph instantly obeyed.
So what is God telling you to do? Are you obeying? Often when God directs us to do something it is not a convenient time, it is not an easy situation, and it may not be something we want to do. Still, when God speaks don’t push Him aside. God is directing you for a reason. Don’t forget the power in obedience.
